Haunted Colleges - Bucknell University by Davy Russell
POSTED: 23 October 98
Students and faculty of Hunt Hall at Bucknell University have been witnessing strange
phenomena caused by a female
ghost for nearly twenty years. The ghost makes an appearance every two to three years
wearing a red or green raincoat.
It is said that the ghost haunts the third and fourth floor of Hunt Hall (nicknamed Haunt
Hall) which houses 150 women. The ghost is often blamed for turning on lights and
stereos, opening and slamming cupboards, hiding custodian's tools, rearranging rooms,
and other mischievous acts.
Custodians claim that the ghost's presence is the strongest in summer, when Hunt Hall is
empty. Their tools disappear, lights are turned on by themselves, and a faint perfume is
smelled when the ghost passes by.
Strange events have happened to students as well. Lisa Forino claimed that the window
above her door had been painted inside and out the night after she had complained about
the hallway light keeping her awake. Her room was locked, and no one confessed to the
window painting.
Other students have reported having stereos spontaneously turn on, objects such as music
CDs fly around the room, posters taken off the walls and stacked on the floor, and one
incident where a disconnected phone under a bed began to ring. It is also said that the
ghost will slip into a dress if it is hung on the back of a door.
Although no ghost encounters have been reported so far this year, students like Cara
Mickelsen remembers waking up one day last fall to find a hand reaching for her face.
Suddenly a bottle of pills fell off her dresser as a stereo blared from down the hall,
frightening Sandra Collins, who had just turned it off.
Some say the ghost is the spirit of a former student who died in a buggy accident during
the early history of the college; while another rumor suggests that it is the spirit of a
woman who fell in a nearby stream and drowned while waiting for her parents.
However, most will agree that the ghost is the spirit of a woman to had a traffic accident
while returning to the school after her mother and brother tragically died.
